Salcheto's Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is one of the most profound and surprising Nobile wines of the vintage — made from 100% Prugnolo Gentile grown in the 22.5-hectare organic vineyards of Tenuta Salcheto in Montepulciano, in the province of Siena. Aged for 18 months in large casks and tonneaux (70/30), then refined for 6 months in bottle. Bright ruby red, with a bouquet of dried flowers, redcurrant, lavender and stony notes; silky on the palate with forest berries, pronounced minerality and a bitter wild-cherry finish. Rated 93 points by Falstaff. Ideal drinking window: 2024–2033.

🍷 Why this 2022 Vino Nobile is different

2022 was a difficult and uneven vintage — late frosts, a wet spring, a summer with extreme heat peaks and hail, followed by a rainy finish. But Salcheto, with thirty years of experience in Montepulciano and a 22.5-hectare organically managed vineyard, with no added sulphites during fermentation, turned climatic complexity into expressive depth. The result is a subtle, mineral Nobile, far removed from the muscular power of other vintages and capable of surprising anyone expecting a heavy wine.

Prugnolo Gentile — the local name for Montepulciano's Sangiovese, clonally selected in this area since the fifteenth century — shows its most elegant side here: dense yet flowing tannins, ripe fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish. It is the wine Francesco Redi described in the seventeenth century as ‘the king of all wines’ — and Salcheto's 2022 shows why that reputation still stands.

❓ FAQ

What is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG?
It is one of Italy's oldest DOCG appellations, produced exclusively in the municipality of Montepulciano (Siena) from Prugnolo Gentile — the local name for Sangiovese clonally selected in this territory since the fifteenth century. The production rules require at least 24 months of ageing, including at least 12 months in wood. For the 2020 vintage, Salcheto ages the wine for 18 months in wood and 6 months in bottle.

What is Prugnolo Gentile?
It is the local Sangiovese clone grown in the Montepulciano area. Historically selected to adapt to the area's specific terroir, it produces wines with greater tannic elegance and a more mineral profile than other Tuscan Sangiovese clones such as Brunello di Montalcino or Chianti Classico.

What does it mean that Salcheto is organic?
Salcheto has certified its production as organic since 2009. The vineyards are cultivated without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers, and fermentation takes place without added sulphites. It is one of the few Vino Nobile DOCG wines produced to this standard.

When is the 2022 Nobile ready to drink?
It has already been excellent since 2024. According to Salcheto, the ideal drinking window is 2024–2033 — it still has 8–9 years of ageing potential ahead. Open the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving or use a decanter.

What is the difference between Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino?
Both are Tuscan DOCG wines made from Sangiovese, but they come from different terroirs and clones. Brunello (the Grosso clone) is structurally more powerful and longer-lived, with a minimum ageing period of 5 years. Nobile (Prugnolo Gentile) has a minimum ageing period of 2 years and is generally more elegant and approachable when young, with a distinctive mineral and floral profile.

Is it available for restaurants and retailers?
