Morellino di Scansano DOCG Bellamarsilia is Poggio Argentiera's entry wine — from the organic winery founded in 1997 by Gianpaolo Paglia in Scansano, Tuscan Maremma. 100% Sangiovese, from vineyards at Baccinello on calcareous clay and at Alberese on sand and silt, with certified organic cultivation, fermentation and maturation in temperature-controlled steel. Deep ruby red, with floral notes of cherry and raspberry, hints of Mediterranean scrub, and a crisp, supple palate with an elegant tannic texture. Rated 88 points by Falstaff.

🍷 Why this Morellino is different

Morellino di Scansano is the only DOCG in Tuscan Maremma — the Sangiovese of this area has a unique Mediterranean character, shaped by its proximity to the sea and the salty breezes rising from Argentario. It does not produce powerful, concentrated wines like Brunello or Nobile: instead it produces crisp, fresh, highly drinkable wines in which red fruit dominates over a mineral and balsamic background reminiscent of the Tuscan maquis.

Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of Podere Adua, a property dating back to the early twentieth century and the period of Maremma land reclamation. Agronomist Gianpaolo Paglia has built, over almost thirty years, one of the appellation's most respected organic wineries. Bellamarsilia — a name evoking the beauty of Maremma — is his most direct interpretation of Morellino: pure fruit, no wood, with steel and vitrified concrete used to preserve the varietal freshness of Maremma Sangiovese.

🥂 Recommended pairings

Morellino di Scansano DOCG Bellamarsilia is an extremely food-friendly Tuscan red. Ideal pairings include pasta dishes with meat sauces, pappardelle with wild-boar ragù, porcini mushroom risotto, grilled meat and steak, stewed game and rosemary tagliata. It is also excellent with aged Maremma pecorino cheeses.

For the quintessential local pairing: Morellino Bellamarsilia with Wild-Boar Ragù La Dispensa Toscana over pappardelle — Maremma Sangiovese and Tuscan wild boar, a classic Scansano pairing. Also perfect with Cave-Aged Pecorino from Caseificio Follonica.

❓ FAQ

What is Morellino di Scansano DOCG?
It is the only DOCG in Tuscan Maremma, produced in the municipality of Scansano in the province of Grosseto. The name ‘Morellino’ is the local nickname for Sangiovese — Tuscany's signature grape — which in this coastal area develops distinctive characteristics: freshness, crisp fruit and saline minerality influenced by the nearby sea.

What does it mean that Poggio Argentiera is organic?
Poggio Argentiera uses certified organic farming methods: no synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers in the vineyards, with careful protection of the balance between vine and terroir. It is one of the historic organic wineries of the Morellino di Scansano appellation.

What is the difference between Bellamarsilia and Capatosta?
Bellamarsilia is Poggio Argentiera's entry-level Morellino — 100% Sangiovese, no wood, aged in steel and concrete, with great freshness and immediate drinkability. Capatosta is the top wine — a blend with Alicante, aged in wood, with greater structure and longer ageing potential.

What can I pair it with besides meat?
Morellino Bellamarsilia is also excellent with aged Maremma pecorino cheeses, Tuscan ribollita, legume soups and pasta with wild-boar ragù. The bright acidity of Maremma Sangiovese also works very well with porcini mushroom dishes.
